Do We?

We took some friends to our family farm last weekend.

A little getaway for my hubs birthday.

But also a place that these friends had never been and wanted to see.

There’s not much to Joppa, AL.

Just a lot of land and functioning farms.

A lot of trailers and houses.

A lot of good, honest, country people. Nothing fancy about them, but everything in their core is extraordinary.

The land of pick up trucks covered in dirt and full of farm supplies.

Our friends wanted to see the land and we needed to check on the cattle, so we went on a little tour around our family land that runs between two counties.

My Dad was explaining the stories and people and history, talking to my friends as if they knew the people he was talking about.

As we drove through a pasture checking the cows, my husband spotted a calf that was less that 24 hours old, laying nearly lifeless, on the ground.

He and my Dad hopped out of the truck and ran over to check on him, attempting to lift him to his feet only to watch him collapse again.

We were surprised we didn’t see his mama, but sometimes that happens, sometimes we get a little lost from our parents, amen? At least that’s what I told myself in the panic I felt that this calf could die.

We sped to Co-Op to get a bottle and formula and sped back to give it to the calf.

My Dad kept saying, “this doesn’t always work y’all. pray it works.”

We surrounded the calf.

My Dad massaging its neck and talking to him, my husband feeding him what he would *barely* take in.

This went on for nearly an hour when all of the sudden …. he had a movement… a bowel movement… and then a moo… and then he started moving his legs and rocking his body back and forth. Finally, he thrusted his body forward and stood to his feet and started walking.

The kind of walking that a normal healthy calf walks like.

He ran straight to his mama, knowing who she was and started feeding immediately, almost as if nothing had happened.

My Dad cried, because thats what he does, and we all clapped and cheered for him, seeing him full of life.

It struck me.

Creatures  know where they come from. They immediately stand up and know who is their protector and provider… even when they get lost from them.

Do we?

Do we wake up daily actually remembering who our Protector and Provider is? Even when we have felt lost from Him?

“If creation still obeys Him, so will I.”
